Camera phones in history – the Sony Ericsson legacy

It’s fitting, really, that Sony Ericsson should be the ones at the forefront of the revolution in camera-equipped mobile phones. After all, it was them who started it all, way back in 2002. Let’s not forget that they were the first company to release a mobile phone with a camera in it, in the UK. That phone was the Sony Ericsson P800, but it didn’t get the mass market penetration Sony Ericsson would’ve liked, what with it being a really top-end smartphone. However, their most iconic handset ever was soon to hit the market, and that one WOULD get great market penetration. It was the Sony Ericsson T610, and it really did change the game. Here was a handset that stood head and shoulders over the other mobile phones around it. It was compact, it was slim, and people LOVED it. Plus, let’s not forget that the Sony Ericsson T610 also featured a built-in camera, and that was really the first handset to hit the mass market, and make people say, ‘Hang on, we really do want cameras in our mobile phones!’

Now, the market has diverged, into entry-level handsets, and top-end camera-equipped mobile phones; and Sony Ericsson want to dominate both!

Sony Ericsson S302 – the entry level happy snapper
